Prepaid Maintenance: A Customized Appeal

PrepaidMaintenance.jpgProducts that promote future trips to your dealership's service department remain crucial in today's competitive retail environment. Prepaid maintenance plans offer a customized appeal for your customers. Typically, about one fifth of customers return to visit the service department at a dealership. When you offer a prepaid maintenance plan to your customer, you may double, or even triple your return visits.

A Customized Appeal

Traditional service plans typically offer discounts on oil and filter changes, tire rotation, and wiper blade replacement. The next generation of prepaid maintenance plans offer value-added services such as loaner cars, flushes, and state-mandated inspections. Not only will your customers see the additional value, but you will find that building that value makes prepaid plans easier to sell.

Safety Inspection

Although prepaid maintenance plans foster loyalty towards your dealership's service department, they also give you an opportunity for upselling additional parts and services. One way to upsell is by providing a multipoint safety inspection for each car that visits your shop. This gives you the opportunity to legitimately offer additional products and services that are outside of their prepaid maintenance plan.

Complimentary Plan

A used car sale typically results in 5 to 8 percent of customers returning for a service visit. If you offer a complimentary plan with each of your used car sales you can increase returned visits to more than 50 percent. The complimentary plan does not need to be a full plan. You can offer three or four products and expect the return to be at least three times the cost of the plan.

Prepaid maintenance plans offer ways for you to increase your service revenue while providing complete service to your customers. Do not assume that you cannot upsell those who buy the plan. They have already demonstrated a willingness to buy products and services from your dealership, so they are as likely to agree to your upselling efforts.
